Put on a Happy Face and Dance like Crazy!

So I've been home for almost three weeks. In that time I have looked for wedding dresses, looked for bridesmaid dresses, ordered invitation samples, looked for more bridesmaid dresses, received some of my invitation samples, and visited the florist. All done during the day of course. At night... I've watched TV with Mom, putzed around the Schminternet and talked hours on the phone with Noona and Stink Pants #5. At night... I'm entertained by The Antiques Roadshow, reality tv, crime dramas and Kareoke Wednesday. And there's Puzzle Pirates. There's always Puzzle Pirates.

Regardless to say, I have no scheduling conflicts in case anyone wants to invite me to dinner. Well, I did until earlier today.

On Tuesday, during one of my putzing jaunts on around the Schminternet, I wondered to myself, "Are there any plays going on?"

Well, I knew that the local community theater has a show going up, but they're doing some musical based on Patsy Cline's life, which only has a cast of five (I know, I know, it's "community" theater. I don't know what they were thinking), two ladies and three men. I didn't audition for it because I was in Oregon, but I don't think they'd cast me anyway.

So I looked up plays that were going on elsewhere. There's a larger city to the north that has a community theater, but the audition for their next play is at the end of January. I kept that one in mind. Then I checked playhouses in Scaginaw. Eureka! They're doing Bye Bye Birdie!

So I call my musical/actor/kareoke friend Lord Steven.

-----------------------------
Laura: Hey! Wanna audition for a show with me tomorrow?

Lord Steven: Instead of kareoke? Okay. Where is it?

Laura: Scaginaw. They're doing "Bye Bye Birdie".

Lord Steven: Oh... well, I guess I could just try out. What kind of time commitment is it?

Laura: Monday through Friday, 7:00 to 10:00>

Lord Steven: Oh... hmmm.

Laura: Just come and try out. It'll be different than the auditions here. We have to sing a song.

Lord Steven: From the play?

Laura: No, any song.

Lord Steven: Any song?

Laura: Yeah, but you have to have the sheet music.

Lord Steven: Sheet music? What is this sheet music you speak of?

Laura: I've got sheet music, don't worry about it.
-----------------------------

We proceeded to talk about what songs we should sing and who else we could call to come with us.

The next day, I actually put on make-up (Wow!) and picked Lord Steven up at his house. We got to the playhouse with Mapquest's help and filled out audition forms. Then, they had us each hold up a number and they took our pictures! How neat is that? Guess it was a good thing I put on some eyes. I was number 36.

After that we entered and auditorium with people seated here and there. The majority of auditioners consisted of (surprise) girls between the ages of 15 and 25.

I sang "Mr. Wonderful" from the musical "Mr. Wonderful." Lord Steven sang "Who Am I" from "Les Miserables." We did well. Of course, there's always something you think you could've done better in an audition, but for the most part, all was good.

Then came the dance audition.

I was surprised there was a dance audition, but then again I wasn't. Dance auditions for musicals are not unheard of, of course. So we all trucked downstairs to dance in a 60's fashion, with lots of shoulder shaking. I learned the steps, shook my shoulders, and messed it up all three times. I can dance! Why was I messing up?! I have no idea, but my dance audition did not go well. However, all I had to do was ask if I could do it again and then I did fine :-)

So today, I hang around the house and Mom is painting. My cellphone rings and it's the director. I got a part! It's a small part, some girl named Gloria, but she has a song to sing with some others. I don't know how extensive the song is, but I hope I do it well.

The huge surprise came when the director told me they were casting Lord Steven as Albert, the lead! Holy Crap! I was so excited for him. Lord Steven really likes singing, that's why he auditions for musicals. The first musical we were in together was "Annie Get Your Gun" where he was cast as Chief Sitting Bull, a non-singing part. Needless to say, he was a little disappointed by that at first, but he got a couple solos in the chorus.

Our next rehearsal is on Sunday for the first read-thru. I'm so excited! I haven't had a speaking/singing part in a musical since I was in "A Chorus Line" at college. So, for all my friends and family out there, come and see Lord Steven and I in "Bye Bye Birdie" in March!
