South Beach Diet Day 10: I found Mom's weight on my midriff.

So today was Day 10 for Mom's South Beach Diet. Substitution still runs rampant. Today, she didn't even prepare anything that was in the book for her dinner. Instead, we had Filipino food: poached smelt with onions and green beans, mushrooms and acorn squashed sauteed with patis (Filipino sour fish sauce).

Mom's justification for her unadulterated disregard of the menu for today:
  • She's tired of salad
  • She didn't eat any rice
  • The food she prepared follows the Diet
  • She's lost 5 lbs.

My main problem with Mom's free substitution activity is that the reason a diet gives you a menu every day is so you can follow it. Also, acorn squash is not on the "recommended" list for the first two weeks (shame shame). The substitution shenanigans that Mom is doing now should probably be done later, when she's doing her "maintenance dieting." I guess it's not a big deal though. If she's happy with it, then it's okay. She's following it well enough for her, and anyone who knows my mom knows that you can't tell her what to do. Mom will just ignore what you say.

Since Mom has been on this diet, I feel like I have been gaining a little weight. Yes, gaining. My father, in his ever-loving way of being "supportive," decided to fill the house with doughnut holes, croissants, and a sweet potato pie. He said we should count the doughnut holes every day to make sure Mom's not eating any! (Good job Dad, thanks for helping out.)

Dad doesn't realize it's not Mom who suffers, it's me! Since the pastries entered our house three days ago, I've had two pieces of pie, the rest of the doughnut holes, and the croissants are calling my name as we speak! Add that to the lunches at Subway and the New China Restaurant, and you get a tubbier Laura.

Pastries + Lunches with Dad = Laura with extra face fat

I can't say I've actually gained weight though. I haven't checked the scale at work lately. It just feels like it, you know?

We'll see who's the biggest loser at the end of this week, Mom for losing weight or me for gaining it.
